The Recreational Therapist/Technician works under the supervision of the Recreational Therapy Director (or Assistant Director, in the absence of the Director), to meet the needs of residents in the facility. The Recreational Therapist/Technician assists the Director or Assistant Director in implementing the APIED process with residents in the facility, working alongside a team of other RT professionals. Under the supervision of the Therapeutic Recreation Program Director, AWARE’s Recreational Therapist (RT) is responsible to respond to assigned TRP intake referrals. Services may be offered in the home, AWARE facility or in the community. 

RT will be responsible to design protocols for interventions and offer services that may include individual sessions or groups. Provide timely documentation in the designated EHR on client progress or challenges toward achievement of identified treatment objectives. Engage in ongoing evaluation of services to ensure efficiency and quality of services offered. Upon transition or upcoming discharge, RT will work with the team to provide planning and recommendations for success.

Copper Hills Youth Center, located in West Jordan, UT is a private residential treatment center for adolescents 12-17 years of age. As a recreation therapist, you will have a caseload of 25-30 residents, and you will be conducting psychoeducational groups, ropes course groups, adventure outings, service outings and community outings.

You will work a Tuesday-Saturday schedule and your days will generally start around 8am and end at 4pm, but that can/will flex depending on the needs of the department and the needs of your caseload. You will be expected to attend all meetings and trainings related to your job and your caseload. On Saturdays the days tend to be different depending on the outings that are being conducted. You will be required to work at least 2 Saturdays per month, but sometimes it will be 3 Saturdays per month, depending on the needs of the department.

OVERVIEW

We are looking for a Recreational Therapist who has experience working with teenagers, preferably on the autism spectrum, and who is enthusiastic and passionate about RT, residential treatment, and working with a collaborative and interdisciplinary team of professionals. You would also be involved with taking what's working well with the existing program, and have the freedom to build upon it to make the program your own. High organization and communication skills will be important in this role. This is a management position. The Recreational Therapist will oversee all programs and supervise another Recreational Therapist (Part-Time).

Most youth residential treatment programs use a behavioral approach to therapeutic and residential support, but we set ourselves apart for our students by using an attachment-based approach. Everything we do is through the lens of attachment theory. As a member of the MLA team, you'll get great training in attachment styles, and how to best help teens in our program to build healthy relationships with themselves, their peers, and caregivers. Additionally, we focus on helping students identify the core issues behind their behaviors and thoughts, and then how to address those core needs. Full Time Recreation Therapist- New Focus Academy

Responsibilities

Develops schedules, budgets, and various protocols involving the Recreation Therapy Program. Assess students’ level of functioning and well-being within various domains of life, develops treatment goals, plans, and implements intentionally chosen activity and community-based interventions and techniques that are specifically designed to promote increased functioning and well-being within the assessed domains. Documents students progress and provides a discharge summary. Participates in the management of a therapeutic adolescent environment including: developing rapport with adolescents, therapeutic community group sessions, crisis intervention, problem solving management and intervention group meetings, and activities for daily living. Participates in the professional multi-disciplinary case conference meetings and contributes to the prescriptive treatment plan and interventions development and implementation.

Responsibilities:

• Plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate, and direct the activity programs of this facility.

• Assist in the development, administering, and coordinating of department policies and procedures.

• Keep abreast of current federal and state regulations, as well as professional standards, and make recommendations on changes in policies and procedures to the Administrator.

• Review department policies and procedures, at least annually, and participate in making recommended changes (e.g., ADA, ergonomics, air quality, etc.).

• Develop and implement policies and procedures for the identification of medically related activity needs of the resident.

• Participate in community planning related to the interests of the facility and the services and needs of the resident and family.

• Participate in discharge planning, development, and implementation of activity care plans and resident assignments.

• Interview resident/families as necessary and in a private setting.

• Perform administrative requirements, such as completing necessary forms, reports, etc., and submitting such to the Administrator as required.

• Involve residents and families in planning facility activity programs.

• Assist in arranging transportation to other facilities when necessary.

• Refer resident/families to appropriate social service personnel when the facility does not provide the services or needs of the resident.

• Provide information to resident/families as to Medicare/Medicaid, and other financial assistance programs available to the resident, as necessary.

• Provide consultation to members of our staff, community agencies, etc. in efforts to solve the needs and problems of the resident through the development of activity programs.

• Assist in the review and updating of departmental job descriptions at least annually.

• Assume the authority, responsibility, and accountability of directing the activity department.

• Maintain a productive working relationship with the medical profession and other health related facilities and organizations.

• Review and evaluate the department’s work force and make recommendations to the Administrator.

• Coordinate activities with other departments as necessary.

• Work with the facility’s consultants as necessary and implement recommended changes as required.

• Delegate authority, responsibility, and accountability to other responsible department personnel.

• Make written and oral reports/recommendations to the Administrator concerning the operation of the activity department.

• Assist in standardizing the methods in which work will be accomplished.

• Interpret the department’s policies and procedures to employees, residents, visitors, government agencies, etc.

• Keep abreast of economic conditions/situations and recommend to the Administrator adjustments in activity programs that assure the continued ability to provide daily activities.

• Review and develop a plan of correction for activity deficiencies noted during survey inspections and provide a written copy of such report to the Administrator.

• Assist the Infection Control Coordinator in identifying, evaluating, and classifying routine and job related activity functions to ensure that tasks involving potential exposure to blood/body fluids are properly identified and recorded.

• Review departmental complaints and grievances from personnel and make written reports to the Administrator of action(s) taken. Follow facility’s established procedures.

• Assist the Quality Assessment & Assurance Committee in developing and implementing appropriate plans of action to correct identified deficiencies.

• Develop, implement, and maintain an ongoing quality assurance program for the activity department.

• Participate in facility surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies.

• Interview residents or family members to obtain activity information.

• Ensure that all charted activity progress notes are informative and descriptive of the services provided and of the resident’s response to the service.

• Maintain a reference library of written material, laws, etc., necessary for complying with current standards and regulations, and that will provide assistance in maintaining a quality activity program.

• Involve the resident/family in planning objectives and goals for the resident.

• Meet with the administration, medical and nursing staff, as well as other related departments in planning activity programs.
