Discovery Academy is a therapeutic boarding school located in Provo, Utah. Situated in between the spectacular Wasatch Mountains to the east and Utah Lake to the west, a variety of outdoor educational and recreational opportunities are literally at our doorstep. Discovery Academy boarding school serves students ages 13-17. We offer the best of both worlds - separate programs for boys and girls with opportunities for appropriate co-ed interaction. Our student body is limited to just 32 girls and 50 boys. Our small boarding school environment lets us create an atmosphere where every student is known and every need is addressed. At Discovery Academy, academics, residential living, and therapeutics are all built on an experiential foundation. In each area, our students learn by doing. We focus on building relationships, respect, and responsibility. Using this boarding school model, we help students discover their true potential, rekindle their love for learning and prepare for post-high school educational opportunities.
The Therapeutic Recreation program at Discovery Academy is brand new and is being launched in October of 2020. Discovery Academy saw the value that an evidence-based Therapeutic Recreation program could add to their already industry-leading programming. The recreation therapy program at Discovery Academy is adventure-based utilizing activities such as rock climbing, skiing, snowboarding, and canyoneering to teach therapeutic skills and help students generalize those skills to all aspects of their life. The department offers groups and individual sessions to students, experiential training for front-line staff, and groups for families during quarterly parent workshops. Recreation therapists at Discovery Academy work closely as part of the clinical team, serve on interdisciplinary treatment teams, and work with the residential and academic departments to enhance programming offered to students. Other programming includes day-long mastery trips, camping trips, drama productions for parent workshops, intramural sports, and weekend activities.
Due to how new the recreation therapy program is at Discovery Academy, you will gain firsthand experience developing an evidence-based, theory-backed program from the ground up. This will include in-depth exposure with every aspect of the APIED process under the supervision of expert clinicians. Interns will also receive facilitation skills with whichever adventure programming is being offered seasonally, free meals while working, and access to pro deals from many outdoor brands.
